Youth and Money Matters: Precarity, Wellbeing and New Technologies

Date: Monday 28 November 9:00 am - 4:00 pm AEDT
Location: Melbourne Graduate School of Education, University of Melbourne Kwong Lee Dow Building, 234 Queensbury St. Carlton

Issues related to precarity and economic insecurity are central concerns for many sociologists studying the lives of young people. However, direct discussions of money and its use and meaning in everyday life remain rare in youth sociology. Join us and our friends at the Australian Sociological Association (TASA) Sociology of Thematic Group for a full-day symposium in Melbourne. The event brings established and emerging scholars together with speakers from industry and stakeholder organisations to explore issues related to money and youth.

The day will begin with presentations from industry and community organisations and academics, followed by round table sessions for participants to discuss issues related to finance, investment, debt and budgeting.

The symposium features prominent researchers, and experts in the field of finance and youth services. The panellists include:

  • Dr Benjamin Hanckel, Young & Resilient Research Centre, Western Syndey University
  • Professor Lisa Adkins, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, The University of Sydney
  • Professor Steven Threadgold, University of Newcastle
  • Dr Julia Coffey, University of Newcastle
  • Dr Natalie Hendry, the University of Melbourne
  • Aleks Nikolic, Broke Girl Wealth
  • Claire Butler, Financial Capability Program Manager, Brotherhood of St Laurence
  • Anson Parker, Head of Product, Up Banking
