Climate Action Week 2025
SYDNEY, 15 March, 2025: As the city sweltered due to unseasonably high temperatures last week, over 230 community-led events took place as part of Climate Action Week Sydney (CAW).
One such event was co-hosted by Y&R's New Possibilities research team (led by Professor Philippa Collin with Associate Professor Michelle Catanzaro and Dr Luigi Di Martino) who joined forces with Carmel Reyes, Head of Climate Action and Sustainability at Powerhouse Parramatta to co-host a vibrant, interactive Climate Action Week event at PHIVE in Parramatta Square.
The event included lightning (5 min) talks, visual displays, workshops and panel discussions.
The Art of Climate Change Exhibition video
SYDNEY, September, 2024: A powerful exhibition showcasing 50 pieces of work communicating the urgent need for action on climate change was launched at the Greenhouse Climate Tech Hub in Sydney's CBD this evening. The works were created by Western Sydney University students and the event was hosted by the Young and Resilient Research Centre and Edge Impact who are a global, sustainability impact consultancy.
The event was introduced by Michelle Catanzaro (Director of Academic Program & Discipline Lead at the School of Humanities and Communication Arts) and Philippa Collin (Co-Director of the Young and Resilient Research Centre) as a part of the New Possibilities project which is being undertaken by the Young and Resilient Research Centre. The project explores the significance of young people's participation in climate change advocacy and activism and the implications for democracy.
The Explore Program
Explore is a youth research program headed jointly by the Centre for Resilient and Inclusive Societies (CRIS) and the Centre for Migrant Youth (CMY). Explore provides an opportunity for young people from refugee and migrant backgrounds to have direct input into the research that impacts their lives.
Explore researchers are involved at every stage of the research process, from design to dissemination. They are involved across all CRIS research areas. We strongly believe that building resilient societies should be by and for young people, so listening to their voices is critical in meaningful research. We develop Explore researchers’ skills through a tailored training program and ongoing professional advancement, investing in the next generation of resilience research talent.
Climate Custodianship for Change
This short film reveals the qualitative outcomes of Climate Justice: Visual Expressions of Reconciliation and Climate Custodianship for Change, a 2022 First Nations project that harnessed Indigenous methods and methodologies as the approach to research.
Focused on discovering nexus between Australian First Nations Custodians of Country and Ally students, this participatory workshop created enriching opportunities for conversations about valuable place-based experiences which then inspired their active engagement in creating climate activism posters surrounding Country. This project was funded by Western Sydney Creative and facilitated in partnership with UTP and the Wollotuka Institute, UON. The project team included Madison Shakespeare, Dr Michelle Catanzaro, Dr Caelli Brooker, Dr Jess Olivieri, Dr Rachel Morley and Dr Katrina Sandbach.
The Youth Co-Research Masterclass
Hosted by Y&R’s Co-Director Professor Amanda Third, Y&R Research Officers Louisa Welland and Mia Cox, and the Centre for Multicultural Youth's Edmee Kenny and Michelle Lim, the masterclasses showcased a new Youth Co-Research toolkit for researchers, a key output from a collaboration generously funded by the Centre for Resilient and Inclusive Societies.
The masterclasses empowered participants by providing tools and knowledge for effective collaboration with young people in research roles.
Powerhouse Museum youth climate action event
The New Possibilities project is a research project being undertaken by the Young and Resilient Research Centre. The project explores the significance of young people's participation in climate change advocacy and activism and the implications for democracy.
In 2023 an exhibition of student works depicting the climate crisis was held at the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney. The event was organised by Michelle Catanzaro (Director of Academic Program & Discipline Lead at the School of Humanities and Communication Arts) and Philippa Collin (Co-Director of the Young and Resilient Research Centre) as a part of the New Possibilities project.
