Child Information Sheet

Hi there! Thanks for your interest in the In Real Life youth co-design project!

So what’s this about?
A team of researchers from the Young and Resilient Research Centre (at Western Sydney University) and Project Rockit are working with young people across Australia to co-design education that helps young people to create kinder, more positive online worlds. We want to know what matter most to young people, what young people need to know and learn, and howyou want to learn it!

So, what’s co-design?
Co-design means that YOU are the experts in young people’s lives and WE want to learn from you. When we co-design something, we work together to create solutions to a problem facing young people (like online safety!). The solutions we create together will be more powerful because they’re created BY and FOR young people.

What will I be asked to do?
We’d like you to take part in two online workshops. Workshops will be held on Zoom and run by a Project Rockit presenter.

You will first choose to take part in one of three workshops focused on one of the following topics:

  1. Connecting and interacting with others online
  2. Privacy and security online
  3. Getting support and supporting others online

Following this, you will then take part in a 2-hour online workshop focussed on designing and delivering engaging content for young people.

In the workshops, you’ll work with a group of up to 10 other young people. There will be individual and group activities. The workshops are designed to be fun, creative and engaging for young people and will include breaks.

How long will it take?
Both workshops will be 2 hours long each, so you’ll do 4 hours of workshops in total.

What are the good things about taking part?
Your views and ideas are very important! The things you share with us will help create education so that young people to feel safe and included online. These modules will be taken by up to 20,000 young people across Australia, so you’ll be helping them be safer and wiser online by creating education that really works for young people.

You’ll also receive a $50 gift voucher after you have attended each workshop.

Will it make me feel uncomfortable in any way?
If you start to feel uncomfortable at any time during the workshops, you can private message one of the facilitators in the workshop and they can help you. You can also leave the workshop whenever you want. We’ll tell you about support services that are there to help you out, if you need it.

Can I stop taking part?
Yes you can, and you don’t need to tell us why. If you don’t want to be involved anymore, you or your parent/guardian can send an email to the Western Sydney University team using the email below. Or you can just let us know during the workshop that you want to leave. This won’t change your relationship with your school, Western Sydney University or Project Rockit, and it has nothing to do with your schoolwork! But – if you do, we won’t be able to delete all the things you’ve said done in the workshop. This is because some workshop activities will be in groups so we won’t know which parts are yours!

What happens to my personal information?
We will write a report about the things we find out, and might also use the things you share in other projects. We’ll keep copies of the things you do in the workshop for 5 years and then we’ll destroy them.

If we use a quote from you in the report, we won’t use your name - only your age, gender and state.

You also have the option to stay in touch about future opportunities to take part in research projects with the Young and Resilient Research Centre. If you agree, the personal information you give us (including your email address) will be safely stored within the Centre and no one outside of the Centre will have access to it.

What is ‘extended consent’?
We are asking you to give ‘extended consent’. Consent is saying that you understand the project and are happy for us to use what you say and do in our research. The ‘extended’ part of ‘extended consent’ means you are okay for us to use your information in other projects as well. We ask for this because research can take up a lot of time for people like you and researchers. This will mean that we can learn more things from the things you share, and hopefully help more kids to be healthy, happy and supported. If you don’t understand or want to know more about this, you or your parent/guardian can contact the research team.

How can I contact you?
If you have questions or want to know more, you or your parent/guardian can talk to:

What if I have a complaint?
If you are worried about any part of this project and would like to talk to someone about it, you can contact a member of the Ethics Committee on Tel +61 2 4736 0229 or email humanethics@westernsydney.edu.au. When they ask you what the ethics reference number is, tell them it’s: H14753Your conversation will be private and they will not tell the research team who you are. Any issues you have will be taken seriously because your safety is the most important thing.
