ICS Seminar - Thomas Longden
Temperature-related energy insecurity in Australia and the United Kingdom
Presenter: Thomas Longden
Discussant: Declan Kuch
Chair: Rakesh Kumar
Abstract
Extreme temperatures increase energy use leading to greater energy insecurity. This leads to a greater risk of adverse impacts on the health of vulnerable people. While there is a wide literature on the importance of energy security, very few studies quantify the incidence of disconnections and running out of credit. This seminar will focus on prepayment for energy in Australia and the United Kingdom. Prepayment for electricity is rare in Australia and it is predominantly used in remote Indigenous communities. The UK study focuses on the relationship between cold temperatures and energy insecurity events for gas.
