Engaged Teaching Project

Engaged Teaching
Project

Student engagement is the key to student success. Teaching practices that are pedagogically informed, leverage new technologies and new teaching spaces effectively, and are empirically validated can help to ensure that students, whether in the classroom or online, are actively engaged in their learning, optimising their chances for success.

Western aims to engage students through innovative and engaged teaching practices that are scalable across the institution and measurable in ways that allow for continuous improvement, and which allow for evidence of impact to be recorded, from real-time learning analytics to national Quality Indicators in Learning and Teaching (QILT) outcomes.

Through the Engaged Teaching Project, Western will achieve sustained transformation of its teaching practices in a meaningful and visible way that enhances student experience and outcomes, and the University’s reputation within the sector.

What is ETP?

The Engaged Teaching Project (ETP) aims to build on the momentum of improving our nationally benchmarked Student Experience Survey results with targeted and impactful projects. The ETP will enable our teachers to co-create sector-leading student learning experiences through inspiring teaching practices in our undergraduate programs.

The ETP will focus on adopting new approaches to facilitate the capability development of our teachers to enable them to co-create sector-leading student learning experiences through inspiring teaching practices in our undergraduate programs.

The project works across three overlapping areas of activity and will be staged with decision points for further growth and initiatives as insights are developed in each area:

  1. Understand why our learners respond this way and identify what learning experiences would provide a positive response to these questions
  2. Collaboratively develop and implement new teaching delivery models and standards, that reflect a better mix of engaged teaching and learning experiences and bring students and staff back to campus
  3. Collaboratively identify optimal pedagogical engagement practices in different teaching groups
  1. Support teachers in the classrooms with student partners as engaged teaching interns
  2. Engage new external technology partners to create engaged content and learning communities in the classrooms
  1. Support academic workforce renewal and encourage accountability
  2. Support leaders and reward Schools for improvement with performance-based funding
  3. Ensure students are aware of and recognize the improvements in the SES responses.
