International Student

As a student visa holder, it is essential that you maintain your enrolment in accordance with the conditions of your student visa. You are responsible for understanding your visa conditions and taking appropriate action if your enrolment circumstances change.

International students must always comply with their student visa requirements. Changes to your study load, enrolment status, or academic progression may affect your visa and overall study status. Seeking advice early and taking timely action are critical to avoiding potential visa complications.

If you are unsure of your visa length or conditions, you can access your visa details by downloading a copy of your visa through the Visa Entitlement Verification Online (VEVO) portal

For questions specifically related to your visa conditions or how to apply for a new visa, please contact the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) directly. You may also wish to consult a registered migration agent or immigration law expert for tailored advice relevant to your individual circumstances. Additionally, the University maintains an agent registry, which may assist you in identifying a migration agent appropriate to your specific needs.

For support: submit an enquiry

Study Plans and Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE)

If you experience academic progression issues or need to apply for a Leave of Absence or Reduced Study Load, your course progression and expected completion date may be affected. This may require you to remain in Australia longer than originally anticipated when your student visa was granted.

In these circumstances, you may be required to request a new Study Plan to support your application for a new Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE). The Study Plan outlines your revised subject progression and updated expected course completion timeframe, ensuring your enrolment remains aligned with student visa requirements. Study Plans can be requested directly from your School.

A CoE is an official document issued by the University confirming your approved enrolment details. It is required for student visa applications, visa extensions, and to maintain ongoing compliance with student visa conditions. Please note that CoEs are issued in accordance with the International Student Extension of Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) Procedure.

Leave of Absence (LOA) and Reduced Study Load (RSL)

As a student visa holder it is essential that any changes to your enrolment, such as taking a Leave of Absence or applying for a Reduced Study Load, are carefully considered, as they may impact your course progression, Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE), and student visa.

Leave of Absence (LOA)

A Leave of Absence is a temporary break from your studies. You may apply for a Leave of Absence after completing at least one subject in your program.

  • Leave may be approved for 6 or 12 months, up to a maximum of 12 months per program
  • Applications must be submitted before the relevant census date
  • Taking a Leave of Absence may affect your expected course completion date and may require the issuance of a new CoE.

International students are strongly encouraged to seek advice before applying, as a Leave of Absence may impact student visa compliance.

Reduced Study Load (RSL)

A Reduced Study Load allows you to enrol in fewer subjects than a full‑time study load in a teaching session, where there are approved academic, compassionate, or compelling reasons.

  • Reduced Study Load applications are assessed on a case‑by‑case basis
  • Approval is subject to meeting student visa requirements
  • A Reduced Study Load may affect your academic progression and CoE duration

Important Visa Considerations

Any approved Leave of Absence or Reduced Study Load may extend your course duration and require updates to your Study Plan and Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE). Changes to your enrolment must continue to align with your student visa conditions.

If you are unsure how a Leave of Absence or Reduced Study Load may affect your visa:

Further Information and Support

For detailed guidance, please refer to:

Support is available, and students are strongly encouraged to seek advice as early as possible before submitting any applications.

Travel During Teaching Sessions

As a student visa holder, there may be occasions where you are required to undertake emergency travel during a teaching session. In such circumstances, you should contact the Student Services Hub or the Student Welfare Service as soon as possible to discuss your situation and determine what, if any, actions you may be required to take in relation to your studies.

Please note that academic and professional staff cannot approve travel, nor can they provide letters of support for travel undertaken during teaching periods. If you choose to travel during a compulsory teaching period, you do so at your own discretion and must take full responsibility for any impact on your attendance, assessments, or academic progression. Students are expected to explore all available options to manage their study requirements accordingly.

If you are unsure about travel restrictions or the travel rights available to you under your visa subclass, please contact the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) or seek advice from a registered migration agent or immigration law expert.

Travel During Official Sessions Break

If you plan to travel during the official semester breaks applicable to your program, as published in the University’s Academic Year webpage, you may request a Vacation Travel and Work Letter. This letter confirms your eligibility for travel and work during official University vacation periods. Requests for travel letters should be submitted in advance of travel.
