Your Student Success Coaches and Academic Learning Advisors are dedicated to helping you kickstart your academic journey. Explore the range of activities and register for as many events as you like, we're here to support you on your journey.
When you study at The College, you will be assigned a dedicated Student Success Coach and can access both individual and group coaching sessions. Our coaching style focuses on more than just the academic learning. We help you identify and draw on your strengths to achieve success and we understand that you are capable, resourceful and resilient.
Academic Learning Advisor workshops help you get your head around how things work and build the skills you will use throughout your diploma. These workshops cover all the essentials: how to take better notes, write assignments, deliver presentations, and even how to reference properly (yes, that part matters!). They are relaxed, practical, and run by friendly Academic Learning Advisors who get what you are going through. After all, they have been exactly where you are now!

What helped me at university? Building friendships with the high achievers in class was important to me. I approached university like it was my full-time job, dedicating my weekdays to studying and getting involved in campus activities. This left my weekends free for casual work, spending time with friends, and finishing any assessments I hadn't completed during the week.

What helped me at university: At university, the most helpful thing for me was having a support system in place — whether it was family, teachers, or peers. Being open to seeking help when needed and staying proactive with my studies made a significant difference in my experience. I also found that balancing my academic responsibilities with personal interests and activities kept me grounded and motivated.
Career history: Since 2016, I have taught at The College, where I've had the privilege of getting to know students and following their academic journeys. Currently, I am studying a Master of Counselling and will soon be pursuing a Doctorate in Creative Arts. I'm also a passionate writer, and my love for learning drives me to help others succeed in their academic journey. I remember my early university experience and how hard it was to navigate all the systems and opportunities on offer. #1 tip for success: Your university workload can feel enormous but to make things easier on yourself map out all of the tasks you need to complete and create daily to-do lists of the tasks you need to complete. I live my life by planners and to-do lists! If you prioritise things appropriately you will be able to manage your workload with greater ease.
What helped me at university? Asking questions is the key to success both at university and in the workforce. Ensuring you have a well-rounded understanding of the content you are studying will allow you to critically assess it from multiple perspectives and provide you the flexibility to apply your learning to a range of contexts in and out of the classroom environment.

Career history: My career has been a great adventure! I’ve run a small business, been a consultant, set up a registered charity; and worked in both the public and private sectors. For the last ten years, I’ve worked at Western Sydney University. A common thread throughout my career has been teaching and helping people, which is what has led me to this role.

What helped me at university? Having the confidence to engage with my academics and peers when I was trying to understand a topic.

Cohorts and Campus: I am based in Campbelltown and cover Campbelltown and Liverpool campuses.
Qualifications: I have a Bachelor of Arts, in French and Linguistics, with a major in Japanese. I also have a CELTA (Cambridge Certificate of English Language Teaching to Adults). My area of expertise is academic literacy.
Why I think Academic Learning Advisors are important for your student journey: Sometimes studying at university can feel overwhelming and it is hard to know where to start. This is where the ALAs can help. We provide academic support throughout your studies at The College, through face-to-face and online workshops each week during block subjects, and additional academic support for individual students where needed.
Why I love being an Academic Learning Advisor: People talk about those “Aha” moments and this often happens in our workshops. I love it when students leave with tangible strategies and tips for academic success, whether it be how to interpret their next assessment question, where to find academic sources for their case study, or how to overcome presentation nerves. And I love it when they come back for more!
#1 tip for success: Make time to learn — studying at uni is not just about passing your assessments; it’s about making lifelong friends and learning how to be a good learner.
What helped me at university? My friends! After a tough class, we would go to the café and have a coffee and chat about what confused us or what we didn’t understand. This really helped me work out what I needed to study more and what I already knew.
Career history: After uni I moved overseas and taught English as a Second Language in various countries, including France, Canada and Australia. In 2016 I started teaching Academic English at The College across all the diploma programs and this year I moved into the ALA role.
Cohorts and Campus: I am based in Bankstown and I also cover Parramatta, my cohorts are primarily Arts, Education and Social Sciences students.
Qualifications: I have a Bachelor of Arts in Teaching English Language and Literature, a Master’s degree in Linguistics, and a PhD in English literature. I also hold a TESOL qualification. Literature and academic literacy are my areas of expertise.

Qualifications: I hold a Master in Teaching and a Bachelor of Science. Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) Education is my area of expertise.

Why I love being an Academic Learning Advisor: I love my job because it allows me to make a real difference in students’ lives. Every day, I get to support learners in building the skills and confidence they need to succeed — not just academically, but personally and professionally as well.
#1 tip for success: The best way to be successful is to be independent. Make sure that you try to solve an issue yourself first, but if that does not work, ask for help, we are happiest when we are able to assist.
What helped me at university? Lecturers that were genuinely interested in my success, who helped me even when I didn’t know how to ask for help.
Career history: I have worked at the College since they opened their doors, but I still tell people that it is my first day.
