Researcher
Biography
Dr Cottier completed his PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience in 2024, and joined the MARCS institute as a postdoctoral research fellow in 2025. His previous research has involved using behavioural methods and electroencephalography to elucidate upon the processes and mechanisms underlying visual perception and consciousness.
Research Interests
Dr Cottier's research seeks to elucidate upon how humans perceive and interact with their external environment. As such, he is interested in understanding the neural mechanisms and processes that underly visual perception. He is particularly interested in understanding how and why there are individual differences in visual perception. Why are there some individuals who seem to be better at certain aspects of visual perception (e.g., super-recognisers in face perception). His research also seeks to understand the temporal dynamics underlying the human brain's representation of the external environment. To elaborate, he is particularly interested in theoretical questions regarding temporal binding, whether perception is discrete, and questions regarding the predictive and postdictive nature of the brain.
