International Visiting Fellowship

Distinguished Professor Anne Cutler, 1945 – 2022. A Distinguished Professor at the MARCS Institute for Brain, Behaviour and Development, Western Sydney University and a pioneer and influential figure in the field of psycholinguistics, Anne’s career included appointments at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Cambridge, Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics and Program Leader in the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for the Dynamics of Language (CoEDL) at Western. Anne’s research is highly regarded and honoured around the world, with Anne receiving numerous awards including election to the Australian Academy of the Humanities and the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia, the Royal Academy of Sciences and the Holland Society of Sciences in the Netherlands, and the British Academy and the Royal Society in the United Kingdom.

To celebrate Anne’s scholarship, research legacy and verve in an enduring way, Western Sydney University has established an annual International Travel Fellowship, open to eminent researchers in the following disciplines – Linguistics, Speech Science, Developmental Psychology, Experimental Psychology, Psycholinguistics, Computational Linguistics, Speech/Communication Engineering, to spend time at the MARCS Institute for Brain, Behaviour and Development. The fellowship will give an international visitor the opportunity to develop and conduct collaborative projects with researchers in the Institute and Australia for a period of 2 – 3 months.

The MARCS Institute for Brain, Behaviour and Development is an interdisciplinary research institute of Western Sydney University. The vision for the Institute is to optimise human interaction and wellbeing across the lifespan. Researchers strive to solve the problems that matter most through the themes sensing and perceiving, interacting with each other, and technologies for humans. Researchers in the Institute come from many disciplines including cognitive science, neuroscience, developmental psychology, language science, music science, and biomedical, electrical, electronic, software and neuromorphic engineering.

Fellowship

The Fellowship will support a 2-3 month stay for an international eminent researcher intending to develop a new or existing collaboration with researchers from the Institute. The fellow would be expected to give a public lecture, engage in research, provide mentoring for grad students and early career researchers, and lead a guest lecture. The visiting fellow will be based for the duration of the visit at our new research labs at Westmead Innovation Quarter (WIQ) - a visionary research, health, education and business hub located in the Westmead Health Precinct, Sydney.
The fellowship covers expenses up to a maximum of AUD$30,000 and can be used to support:

  • living allowance
  • accommodation
  • economy airfare
  • visa

The Fellowship will be awarded through a competitive selection process based on the applicant's expertise and track record, and on the project alignment with the Institute's research strengths and priorities. The application must be supported by at least one researcher from the MARCS Institute for Brain, Behaviour and Development and submitted, along with a CV and letters of support, from the applicant's home institution and proposed MARCS host. Visiting status for applicants would be expected to conclude by 20 December 2025.
