Overview

The MARCS ArtScience Lab provides well- equipped affordable creator spaces and technologies within a world-class research institute. It aims to forge artscience collaborations, including new artworks, public exhibitions, research projects and competitive grants, audience development, and STEAM engagement through communities and schools, that would flow from co-locating in Western Sydney.

What is “ArtScience”?

Creativity is a mash-up of aesthetic and analytic thinking according to David Edwards (Artscience: Creativity in the Post-Google Generation, 2008). Labs that epitomise artscience bring diverse disciplines together, for example, music, dance, neuroscience, mathematics, engineering, linguistics, psychology. See, for example, our Music Science Lab. Around the world other examples include Le Laboratoire in Paris, MIT Media Lab, the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics, Frankfurt, IRCAM Paris, and Art Science Research Laboratory, New York.
