Accessible Health Care

Health care access in Australia is primarily provided through the public health care system, Medicare, and private health insurance [1]. All Australian citizens and permanent residents are eligible for Medicare, which offers a range of medical services, including GP and specialist consultations, hospital care, and prescription medicines [2]. In addition to Medicare, individuals can opt for private health insurance, which provides greater access to a wider range of services and shorter waiting times for elective surgery [2]. However, this can come at significant costs and can create a disparity in access to health care between lower and higher socio-economic status (SES) populations.

Australian men may face several barriers to accessing health services, including cost, stigma and cultural attitudes, lack of awareness, geographical barriers, and work and lifestyle factors [3]. Additionally, men may not be aware of the health services available to them or the importance of preventative health measures, leading to a lack of engagement with the health care system [3]. People living in rural and remote areas may have limited access to health care services, making it difficult for men in these regions to access the care they need [1]. Furthermore, work and lifestyle factors, such as long working hours and competing commitments, can make it difficult for men to prioritize their health and attend appointments [1].

For these reasons, it is important that the barriers holding men back from accessing these health services are removed by focusing on care specifically designed for men, that meets them where they are and uses male friendly language [3].
