Associate Professor Gaetano Gargiulo

Position: Research Lecturer

Research Program: Biomedical Engineering and Neuroscience

About Gaetano

Associate Professor Gargiulo received his MS equivalent degree in Electronic Engineering (biomedical specialization) in 2006 awarded by "Federico II" the university of Naples and his Ph.D degree in 2010 awarded by "Alma Mater" University of Bologna.

He has extensive experience in the design, development, test and commercialization of medical devices (bio-potential recording in particular). He has contributed to device design and spin-out of two start-up companies, both operating in the field of bio-instrumentation devices. During the past seven years he has worked towards the achievement of unobtrusive patient monitoring, successfully designing two ultra-high input impedance amplifiers suitable for passive dry (textile, rubber) electrodes. His demonstrated track record includes seven PCT patents, scientific publication and successful international cooperation in the area of bio-signal processing.

In 2015 Associate Professor Gargiulo joined the Bioelectronics & Neuroscience Research Program at The MARCS Institute in the role of Research Lecturer stepping up from the role of Post-doctoral research fellow. His research interests involve investigating the modelling of bio-signal sources and to the development of faster and more accurate diagnostic tools for cardiovascular diseases.

This work aims to increase the diagnostic power of the electrocardiography (ECG) removing a systematic error that is known affects all the recordings almost since inception of ECG. At the same time, this research will not disrupt the current practice, electrodes number, their placement and signal names will be preserved. However, signals will be higher in number and more accurate. This will enable early detection of symptoms therefore fast diagnosis and intervention for cardiac diseases like ischaemia.
