ICS researchers in Future-Makers Issue 7

Future Makers 7 Cover

We are excited to share the release of the latest issue of Future-Makers! Some of our fabulous Institute researchers have again been featured in this issue:

Karen Soldatić and Corrinne Sullivan’s inspiring collaboration helped launch the Dalarinji, Your Story project, which aims to enhance the social, economic, mental, physical, and cultural well-being of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander LQBTIQ+ people. Serving Queer Indigenous Young People Better illuminates how their research has yielded multiple interdisciplinary journal articles, a state-wide roadmap guiding future service delivery, two community reports, and an international symposium to present their findings.

Supported by an Australian Research Council grant, Ien Ang and Denis Byrne have been investigating the post-1840s bidirectional flow of people between Australia and China, captured in both physical places and family histories. It is in this context that they have been documenting A Tale of Two Grocery Stores. The findings of their wider research have been shared in a public database, which is helping many Chinese Australians trace their roots and deepen their sense of identity.

Researchers at the Young and Resilient Research Centre led by co-director, Amanda Third, have taken an inclusive approach to reimagining online safety education. How Young People Became Guardians of Their Own Safety highlights how the centre has enlisted young people as co-researchers to help explore the risks and opportunities present in digital environments, and to develop a framework for online safety education.

Academia and industry are embracing new approaches to economics that weigh the worth of communities and the natural environment. Putting a Price on Ecosystems for Community Value explains how Neil Perry and Louise Crabtree-Hayes’ project highlights how traditional economic frameworks often overlook the broader ecological and social values associated with natural resources. By integrating these values into economic analyses, their work aims to foster sustainable outcomes, including community support and the conservation of endangered species.
