STUDENT HARDSHIP FUND
We are all in the midst of a health, economic and social crisis. This crisis is COVID-19.
At Western Sydney University, our students are facing extreme financial distress with requests for emergency assistance rising by 70% in March this year.
Many students have lost their jobs. Buying food, paying rent, access to internet and a working computer – these basic living needs are now a heavy burden on our students. We must consider our international students who are particularly vulnerable – far away from family and friends with no safety net.
'There's a real sense of satisfaction in thinking that you're contributing to helping someone who's doing it tough or hard at university be able to get the degree that they deserve.'
- Professor Peter Shergold AC, launch of the Staff Giving Appeal - Potential UNLIMITED.
Established by staff in 2009, through the Staff Giving program you can make fortnightly pre-tax donations via payroll to support our students and charity partners.
100% of your contribution will be directed to the cause(s) of your choice and the University will match dollar-for-dollar any staff donation towards scholarships. This means that the impact of your support of our students is doubled.
This is a defining moment.
Join Staff Giving today and help our students break away from what limits them and reach their potential UNLIMITED. It's who we are.
Supporting our Students
Students at Western Sydney University are often more than just students – some hold down multiple jobs, many are raising families, while others are determined to beat the odds despite experiencing social and economic disadvantage.
The reality is...
- 30% of our students work more than 20 hours a week, while studying
- 7,500 students are from disadvantaged areas, and over 550 come from a refugee background
- 65% of our students are the first in their family to attend university
Our students, like the people of Western Sydney, are passionate and determined to succeed, UNLIMITED by their back story.
Since 2012, with the generous support of staff, student, and alumni donors, 114 Western Sydney University Community Scholarships have been awarded to students. Each scholarship, now valued at $6,000 per year, is awarded to students who demonstrate significant hardship and the determination to further themselves, their family, and their community through education.
Join Staff Giving and help our students reach their potential UNLIMITED.
University Matched Funding
The University is committed to providing opportunities for students and matches dollar-for-dollar all donations from staff to scholarships. This means that whatever you give will have double the impact, with a considerably smaller reduction to net salary. For example, a fortnightly payroll donation of $5 has the impact of $10 with matched funding, and an actual approximate net-outlay of $3.38*.
If every staff member gave just $5 per fortnight, with matched funding, 120 additional students could be supported each year with a scholarship.

*assumes 32.5% tax rate – salary of $37,001-$80,000.
