Western Sydney University’s art collection dates to 1989, when its former network members, Hawkesbury, Macarthur, and Nepean were first brought together.

The Collection charts the University’s story and that of its staff, students, and graduates as well as local artists of Greater Western Sydney. It comprises a diverse range of media from painting and photography to mixed media sculptures and decorative arts. The collection has a rich holding of artwork by 20th century and contemporary Australian artists,

Particular strengths of the Art Collection include over 250 artworks by Indigenous Australian artists, 20th Century Australian print-media artists and painters, and artworks by alumni of the University’s fine arts program.

Guiding Principles:

In considering the direction, purpose and use of Western Sydney University’s Art Collection Western Sydney Creative have developed a series guiding principles for the use and access to Art Collection.

  • Ensure the Art Collection becomes a mainstream resource for the University.
  • Ensure the Art Collection becomes a more useful resource to the academic programs of the University.
  • Increase engagement and access to the Art Collection for the University as well as the wider community.
  • Consider the Art Collection role in contributing to the University’s clear mission to create thriving communities by producing successful graduates and impactful research.
  • Ensure the Art Collection contributes to the University’s long-term commitment to the arts and cultural sector, including championing, celebrating and investing in the local in order to assist in the growth and maturation of the region’s arts and cultural landscape.
  • Optimise access to the Art Collection for research, teaching and learning purposes including consideration of a purpose-built contemporary exhibition space to present the Art Collection, alongside temporary exhibitions and events, as well as a state-of-the-art Art Collection visible storage facility.
