Dr Alison Barnes

Dr Barnes is Senior Lecturer, Design, Western Sydney University. She is researching the Powerhouse collection of branded food labels to show how food’s graphic heritage ‘speaks’ differently to diverse communities and builds a sense of belonging and identity. Her exploration seeks to enable an understanding of the relationship with, and importance of, Australian and overseas brands, connecting with Powerhouse interests in food, migration and social history.

Investigating the Powerhouse’s plastics archive: crafting a technical, environmental and cultural history

Professor Gay Hawkins is a Western Sydney University Scholar in Residence. Her research focusses on the cultural, material and political impacts of plastics. Professor Hawkins will be exploring the Powerhouse plastics collection during her residency. A key focus is to engage with multidisciplinary explorations of plastics in order to disrupt the division between scientific and environmental approaches, as opposed to social and cultural approaches.

Dr Jason Reynolds

Changing perceptions of minerals

Dr Jason Reynolds is the inaugural Western Sydney University Scholar in Residence. His research project explores Australia’s changing relationship with the resources it has extracted; a transition witnessed in the present shift away from traditional mineral resources to the current needs of a technology-based society. Drawing on the Powerhouse mineral collection, Dr Reynolds will investigate how museum displays of mineral specimens, once viewed as exemplars of economic geology, have changed over time. His research will provide a narrative for the factors driving changes in the perceived value of minerals once deemed crucial to economic success.
