Pneuma is “air in motion” and the inspiration which follows from sounds in musical activity and interactions

PNEUMA is the Professional Network for Evidence and Understanding of Music Applications.

About Us

The Pneuma Network has emerged from an interprofessional and interdisciplinary group of Western Sydney University based researchers who value sound and music applications for health and wellbeing, linked to our foundational Western Sydney University White Paper: Music and Health PDF, 1489.72 KB (opens in a new window).

We seek to use music to improve health and wellbeing for all people within an evidence based and interprofessional approach.

The Pneuma Network aims to bring together evidence-based research in the area of sound, music, and music therapy into one site for the benefit for the community.

Why Music?

The curative factors and enhancements of music have been known for millennia. Modern health and medical practices are now coming on-board, especially in light of well-established professional music therapy practices.

Even during a pandemic, the power of music to connect, support and console us within our human existence and daily lives has been evident at multiple levels and in multiple places and practices.

The Pneuma Network connects researchers from disciplines such as music therapy, music psychology, nursing, social work, medicine and health promotion with health and education industry needs which service the community and help individuals as part of invigorating further research and practice.

We invite you to connect and delve into our Pneuma Network to find inspiration and awareness through our collective offerings and musings.

Who can Use Music?

Music encourages and supports health and wellbeing outcomes in many ways.

Our consultation-informed Continuum Model comprises seven Nodes of Practice exemplifying the balance between personal enjoyment and therapeutic outcomes, and involves individuals, volunteers, health professionals and registered music therapists.

What is our focus?

pneuma diagram

We recognise many applications of music for health and wellbeing within our professional framework.

Our approach is based on the four key elements:

  1. Pneuma of Knowledge,
  2. Pneuma of Relationship,
  3. Pneuma of Context, and
  4. Pneuma of Community

We undertake for each element a focus and range of activities which can provide inspiration from sounds in musical activity and interactions.

How the members frame what they do – they will each submit this to the network, as per form under development – areas of work will be listed not each exact project, e.g. “Music and music therapy with fertility/IVF” . The individual projects and resultant publications can then be listed under the click buttons, see further below
