Congratulations Shameran Slewa-Younan!

Shameran Slewa-Younan, a Senior Lecturer in mental health at THRI and in the School of Medicine, has recently been awarded two research grants:

Clinical and Economic Evaluation of a Community Mental Health Support Service For Children and Adolescents With Chronic Conditions in the UAE

Funded by the Al Jalila Foundation, United Arab Emirates

This is a collaborative project with Dr. Nabeel Al-Yateem, College of Health Sciences, University of Sharjah, Sharjah, UAE and Associate Professor Rachel Rossiter, School of Nursing, Midwifery and Indigenous Health, Faculty of Science, Charles Sturt University.

This project will evaluate mental health support services for children and adolescents in the UAE. Following on from their mental health literacy investigation of school nursing and other health professionals, it was clear that improving mental health literacy was needed. Additionally, the researchers highlighted the importance that extends beyond improving mental health literacy and ensuring it translates into person-centered, compassionate and evidence-based care with benefits that extend to the entire community.

Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Youth and teen Mental Health First Aid Training

Funded by South Western Sydney Primary Health Network

This is a collaborative project with Mental Health First Aid Australia which involves the development, delivery and evaluation of the Youth (opens in a new window) and teen (opens in a new window) Mental Health First Courses in South Western Sydney PHN.

The overall aim of this project is to build community capacity to increase the mental health literacy of adolescents and adults who work with young people in local high schools from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) populations.
