Professor Jonathan Tapson new Director of MARCS Institute

Research spotlight: Professor Jonathan TapsonThe MARCS Institute is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Jonathan Tapson as its new Director. 

Professor Tapson brings a wealth of experience to the role and is very excited to lead MARCS Institute into the future. 

He officially commenced his new role on 1 January 2015. 

Jonathan received a B.Sc in Physics in 1986, a B.Sc in Electrical Engineering in 1988, and his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering in 1994, all from the University of Cape Town, South Africa. 

From 1997 - 2010, he was a professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Cape Town, before joining the the School of Computing, Engineering and Mathematics, University of Western Sydney in 2011, as a Professor in Electrical Engineering. 

Jonathan has published more than 100 papers on his research and holds 10 patents. 

He is a co-founder of two start-up companies and one not for profit organisation. 

MARCS would also like to take the opportunity to thank outgoing Director Professor Denis Burnham for his leadership of MARCS over the past 16 years, and his significant contribution to growing the multidisciplinary research concentration into an institute. 

Denis will continue to lead the Speech and Language program at MARCS and work on his numerous research projects.
