11am-12pm - MARCS Research Meeting

Topic: Library Refresher

Speaker: Kaysha Carroll

Kaysha Carroll is the Science Librarian, including MARCS and HIE, based at Kingswood. In this talk, Kaysha will be talking about how she can assist with  research related matters such as research, information management, data management, open access, publications, and setting up alerts.

Kaysha is an experienced School Librarian, working with numerous schools and institutes over her 18 years at Western Sydney Library. She is the primary contact for researchers and higher degree research students for the School and Institutes, and can provide advice on the library services and resources throughout the entire research life cycle. This includes outlining the advanced features in databases to save time with your research as well as considerations with research data management and open access when starting your research. Kaysha can discuss the benefits of strategic publishing to get your research noticed outside academia, and understanding impact metrics when building track record.

12pm-1pm – MARCS Afternoon Colloquium

Topic: Children's Navigation of Linguistic Diversity


Speaker:  Dr Marieke van Heugten

In many parts of the world, children grow up in linguistically diverse communities, where they encounter various accents on a daily basis. Coping with this accent variation is not a trivial task, especially for young children whose cognitive and linguistic capacities have yet to fully mature. Here, Dr Marieke van Heugten will show (i) how surfacelevel variation in the pronunciation of words affects children’s word recognition, (ii) whether children adapt to unfamiliar variants of their native language, and (iii) what inferences children make about speakers based on their accent alone. The results of this work underline the incredible flexibility of early spoken language processing.
