Topic: Neuromorphic Hardware
Speaker: Dr Ali Mehrabi

Applying deep-learning methods in my research field, “Hardware Security”, to perform successful side-channel attacks, were so inspiring that I was encouraged to focus my research on neuromorphic hardware and its applications in different areas, including cybersecurity.
Low latency computing hardware is the challenge of many modern applications. One of those time-critical applications is Autonomous Driving Vehicles; where, fast message authenticity checking, high-speed machine vision and autonomous decision-making is involved. As a rule of thumb, hazard detection to decide on a proper action must happen in 20 milliseconds. I started my research on accelerating message signature and verification to meet the critical timing constraints in ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems). When it comes to autonomous driving vehicles or driverless cars, I noticed that the booming LIDAR technology is not an answer due to its inertial and computationally expensive nature. In contrast, Neuromorphic vision sensors can record millions of events per second. My research focus is on the development of accelerated neuromorphic vision hardware. As a part of this research, I developed hardware modelling of the human retina system. In parallel, I am working on the applications of neuromorphic algorithms in cybersecurity to detect the abnormal activity of IoT devices due to intrusion by an adversary.

Topic: Cyber Security at Newcastle and Data Centric Security
Speaker: Professor Vijay Varadharajan (University of Newcastle)

After briefly outlining cyber security scenery and the areas of research at the ACSRC@Newcastle, in this talk, we will focus on data centric security challenges and issues. We will start by outlining the data related challenges in security, privacy and trust in the systems context. Then we will discuss specific research projects that emphasize a data centric approach to security and privacy.
