Join us at the next MMM with invited speakers Dr. Celia Harris and Dr. Ruth Brookman as they discuss the Dementia Care Project: a partnership between Western, Deakin, and NTT Pty. Ltd., this will be followed by Priyanka Bharadwaj and Yanping Li who will give update presentations on their PhD.

Title: The Dementia Care Project: a partnership between Western Sydney University, Deakin University, and NTT Pty. Ltd.
Speakers:
Dr Celia Harris and Dr Ruth Brookman

Abstract: The Dementia Care project represents a unique collaboration between NTT Pty Ltd, a leading global technology company, and researchers from Western Sydney and Deaking universities, with complementary expertise across human behaviour, ageing, cognition, and human-computer interaction.

The long term aim of the project is to develop new technological solutions to enhance quality of life for people living with dementia and their carers, with all aspects of design and development conducted in close consultation with representatives from these stakeholder groups. We aim to deeply understand the day-to-day lived experiences of people living with dementia and their carers, and what their “wishlist” of solutions are.

In this presentation, we report back on the initial Discovery and Define phases of the project, in which we have canvassed the needs and experiences of people with dementia and their carers, to understand what effective technological solutions might look like. We describe an agenda for developing technology that enhances personal meaning and relationships, and that is familiar, intuitive, interactive, and tailored to the individual. We discuss the opportunities and challenges for industry-led, interdisciplinary research.

PhD Student Presentations:

1. Title: A turn-key solution for object detection on edge devices

Speaker: Priyanka Bharadwaj

Abstract: This project aims to address limitations to port Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) onto edge computing devices in a power-hungry environment. Various classification problems in images and videos are  being evaluated with the help of Binary Neural Networks (BNNs) to provide a heuristic learning approach for object detection onto neuromorphic chips.

2. Title: Regional accent variability in Mandarin lexical tones
Speaker: Yanping Li

Abstract: This study investigated regional accent variability in Mandarin lexical tones by presenting fundamental frequency variations triggered by regional accents and perceptual diversity of regionally accented Mandarin lexical tones by native Beijing Mandarin listeners

We thank you for your continued attendance at the MMM's and look forward to seeing you again.
