Title Understanding the grants process

Abstract This session will outline what you need to know to get started on your research career.  Karen will outline the purpose and types of funding available, how to identify appropriate sources for your research needs, how to position yourself in a competitive marketplace and tips for preparing and writing compelling and successful grant applications, especially within the context of Western Sydney University. There will be time for Q&A at the end of the presentation.


Dr Karen Hutchings is the Research Development Officer at the MARCS Institute for Brain, Behaviour and Development assisting researchers in applying for competitive grant funding including Australian Research Council (ARC), National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), and other schemes.  For the past four years her role has involved helping researchers to create a research plan, identify appropriate schemes to apply to, mentoring them on crafting a pitch/value statement to funding bodies, creating a budget and structuring their writing.  Karen has a PhD in Australian women’s history and more than a decade’s experience as a Senior Commissioning Editor in educational publishing, producing market leading print and digital content for the tertiary academic sector in the Business and Humanities Disciplines at Pearson Australia.
