Topic: 'Let me laugh first’: Lessons from immersion linguistic fieldwork on two continents
Speaker:
Dr Hannah Sarvasy

Abstract:
Human language is a complex system of neither biological nor artificial design. There are myriad manifestations of the possibilities of human linguistic systems, used by communities around the world. Fieldworkers on previously-undescribed languages investigate these systems in situ. Immersion fieldwork, especially done monolingually in the target language, can reveal both the marvels of particular human linguistic systems and the biases and limitations of the fieldworker. This talk covers insights, linguistic and extra-linguistic, from fieldwork on dying Atlantic languages Kim and Bom in Sierra Leone and the vibrant Papuan language Nungon in Papua New Guinea.
