Using the Facility
- Make sure there are no ferromagnetic particles/items in your sample.
- Please also note that the facility is not Physical Containment (PC) rated so samples should not need those requirements or come from a PC rated lab. Samples must be discussed with the Facility Manager in the first instance.
- For internal users and some external university users/collaborators, NMR spectroscopy samples (e.g., 5 mm NMR tube samples) should be prepared in their own laboratories with good hygiene practices in good quality NMR tubes. NB: Specific NMR tubes and vials for imaging are required for the facility and the facility manager should be consulted prior to sample preparation and facility use. The NMR tube/imaging sample vial must be sealed with a lid and parafilm and labelled correctly with the user’s name, date, and sample details.
- Do not use so much parafilm that the tubes become top-heavy. The outside of sample tubes and imaging vials should be wiped with 70%w/w ethanol solution (or approx. 80%v/v ethanol solution) and wiped dry with a lint-free residue-free tissue following the facility procedure. Ensure the label is not easily washed off. Wear clean gloves when preparing samples. The NMR tube should be put into a clean plastic container with lid to transport to the BMRF.
- For other external or commercial users, the sample submission requirements can be discussed during consultation.
- For users with imaging samples or other special requirements these should be discussed with the facility manager during planning. Similarly, other queries regarding sample preparation, solvents and sample concentrations should be discussed with the facility manager (some sample preparation information will also be provided in facility inductions.
- Inductions for facility access and training must be organised with the facility manager.
Required Acknowledgement and Authorship for the BMRF/NIF
WSU and NIF requires all users of facilities to correctly acknowledge the facility in publications/presentations and that any publication resulting from work done in the facility be reported to the facility manager when accepted or presented for reporting/metric purposes. Please see the list below for the correct BMRF acknowledgements for your reference and use. Please also report to the facility manager any publications/conference presentations that may come from using the BMRF.
1) Some instruments in the BMRF are in a time-share arrangement with NIF so those that use the facility in association with NIF (i.e., planned NIF projects) are required to use the following acknowledgement (For more information, including the requirement to use the NIF logo in presentations, see the National Imaging Facility (NIF) acknowledgement requirements or speak to the BMRF NIF fellow Dr Timothy Stait-Gardner):
"The authors acknowledge the facilities and scientific and technical assistance of the National Imaging Facility, a National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) capability, at the Biomedical Magnetic Resonance Facility (BMRF), Western Sydney University."
2) For non-NIF work done with any instrument in the BMRF the following acknowledgement is required:
"The authors acknowledge the facilities and scientific and technical assistance at the Biomedical Magnetic Resonance Facility (BMRF), Western Sydney University."
3) In addition to either the 1) BMRF/NIF or 2) BMRF version acknowledgement above, users may also include the names of specific staff from the BMRF that provided assistance in the acknowledgements (e.g., "The authors are grateful for the assistance of [BMRF staff/researcher name] at the BMRF." in addition to 1) and 2)).
i. Special Note: The BMRF staff/researcher must be included in the author list if they provided significant input into the publication or experimental design/analysis as well as acknowledging the facility via 1) or 2). This should be discussed with the BMRF staff/researcher involved.
4) Finally, if users are unsure of the correct way to describe the equipment for their experimental/methods section, then please ask.
