Independent Living
Western Sydney University accepts international students under 18 years of age, studying on a student visa, where they meet the following requirements:
- Meets other admission requirements;
- Is of at least 17 years of age; and
- Will live in Australia until they turn 18 either:
a) with their parent or legal guardian;
b) with a suitable relative whom the parent or legal guardian nominates; or
c) under an accommodation and welfare arrangement approved by the University.
International students under 18 years of age can complete Western Sydney University’s Accommodation and Welfare Approval Application.

What is a CAAW?
Where a student chooses option 3c above, a university approved accommodation and welfare arrangement, the Western Sydney University will be responsible for issuing a Confirmation of Appropriate Accommodation and Welfare (CAAW). To enable the University to issue a CAAW, all international students under 18 years of age, must live with a host family arranged with (instead of by) one of Western Sydney University’s approved Homestay Providers:

If you need a CAAW, it’s important that you find a host with one of our approved Homestay Providers. For assistance with selecting a Homestay Provider, please contact the Student Accommodation Support Officer.
About Homestay
When you stay with a Homestay Provider, you’ll live in a single room in a private home, with ‘full board’ which means all meals are provided. You will be part of the daily routine of the family, practice your English language skills and experience Australian culture first-hand.
The Western Sydney University’s Welfare Service will support the international student whose parents/guardian enter into a Welfare Arrangement with a Western Sydney University approved homestay provider. Welfare arrangements include:
- Meeting with your Welfare case manager upon arrival as well as regular fortnightly meetings until you turn 18 years of age. Note: meetings may be face or face or online;
- Directing students to access other support services where necessary; and
- Maintaining regular contact with the homestay provider to ensure the student’s needs are being met.

Obligations and Requirements
Part E – Conditions of appropriate accommodation and welfare arrangements of the Admissions and Welfare (International Students Under 18 Years) Procedure states: (21) A student who is the subject of an accommodation and welfare arrangement with the University must:
a) live in the University-approved accommodation for the duration of the CAAW letter or until it is cancelled or changed by the University;
b) act responsibly, including being aware of their responsibilities under Australian law, not participate in illicit activities, and not partake in risk-taking behaviour;
c) attend scheduled meetings with their University case manager;
d) follow the instructions of their University case manager; and
e) obtain their parent/guardian’s prior written approval to stay away from the approved accommodation.
