Ethnic discrimination in the private rental housing market

Professor Kevin Dunn and Dr Rae Dufty Jones are working with colleagues from UTS and Deakin University to examine the nature and frequency of ethnic discrimination in the rental property market. Paired testing is the gold standard method for determining discrimination in housing. Our application of this method to housing in Australia is novel and innovative. The project examines whether two ethnic minorities are treated less favourably than Anglo-Australians when seeking rental housing. Are there spatial variations across Sydney in discrimination? To what extent do key stakeholders perceive an issue of ethnic discrimination, and what remedies do they suggest? Definitive data on ethnic discrimination will be used to leverage policy interest and action. This is an Australian Research Council Discovery Project.
