| Description | NICM Health Research Institute presents Dr Edwin Lim, Senior Research Fellow and lead of the Translational Metabolomic Group, Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences, Macquarie University; Secretary of the International Society for Tryptophan Research; and Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal for Tryptophan Research.Join guest seminar speaker, Dr Lim, as he discusses his research into tryptophan metabolism – an essential amino acid, and its possible connection to improving neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric conditions. As an analytical biochemist and biostatistician, Dr Lim combines complex data from mapping small molecules in human biofluids with artificial intelligence to identify ways to diagnose diseases and predict their progression. He is currently applying a biomarker-guided precision medicine approach to understand how modifiable lifestyle risk factors, such as diet and exercise, can regulate tryptophan metabolism to improve neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric conditions, such as multiple sclerosis and schizophrenia. Dr Lim has received over $4.3M in research funding with over $2.2M as a chief investigator and successfully published more than 60 peer-reviewed papers in high profile journals. OverviewThis presentation The life journey of tryptophan metabolism research: focus on neurodegeneration, will explore how tryptophan metabolism may contribute to neuropsychiatric events and neurodegenerative disorders from prenatal to the ageing brain. Dr Lim will also discuss how inflammation, lifestyle factors, and gut microbiota can interact and affects a host’s tryptophan metabolism that can impact the outcomes of various neuropsychiatric symptoms.
