Xian Zhou joins NICM's 2017 PhD graduates

We are delighted to congratulate NICM PhD candidate Xian (Phoebe) Zhou, who graduated in September’s ceremony. Phoebe’s thesis concentrated on the interactions between two Chinese medicinal herbs - Salvia miltiorrhiza (Danshen) and Panax notoginseng (Sanqi) in vascular disease.

She investigated the best ratio to combine the herbs to help reduce inflammation in vascular disease, preventing cell death and promoting blood vessel regrowth. By identifying the active components and their actions that control vascular homeostasis, her project has increased the evidence-base of herbal medicines. More importantly, exploring the synergism of the combination may explain why these two herbs have been traditionally used.

An outstanding achievement Phoebe, congratulations.
