The Chinese Medicine Centre has incorporated language services and cultural support into its community outreach initiatives. This inclusion aims to enhance accessibility and engagement among diverse cultural groups within the community, demonstrating the Centre’s commitment to respecting and addressing the unique needs of patients from multicultural backgrounds.
At the Chinese Medicine Centre (CMC), we recognise the vital role of cultural communication in advancing medical services. We leverage the leadership of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine in TCM education and research, Western Sydney University's comprehensive resources in TCM, AI, language, and culture, along with CMC's strategic location. We offer:
- NAATI (National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters)-certified Chinese medicine translation and interpreting services.
- Cross-cultural communication support in health settings.
- Bilingual educational material for Chinese medicine students and practitioners.
- Workshops and seminars focused on the cultural aspects of Chinese medicine, emphasizing on medical terminology and cultural nuances.
We aim to enhance the quality of TCM service and knowledge dissemination, prioritising language and cultural facets. We are committed to ensuring quality and accuracy, facilitating cross-cultural communication, enhancing research and education, and promoting international collaboration between Chinese medicine communities in Australia and China.
Language and cultural experts at CMC
Dr. Yanmei (Julie) Liu is an academic uniquely positioned to bridge communication between Chinese and Western medical practices. Her educational background includes a PhD in Linguistics and two Master’s degrees, one in Translation and Interpreting and the other in Natural Science, which enable her to blend different medical disciplines and promote communication within Chinese and Western medicine. Currently, she serves as a lecturer at a Chinese Medicine university and as an Adjunct Fellow at Western’s School of Health Sciences. She is also a translator accredited by both NAATI and CATTI (China Accreditation Test for Translators and Interpreters (CATTI), with extensive experience in medical translation.
In her role, Dr. Liu has led several workshops focused on the translation of Chinese medical classics, contributing significantly to the international understanding of Chinese Medicine. As the Communication Officer for CMC, she has skilfully managed communication and promotional strategies, furthering the centre's and the university's vision to expand the reach of Chinese Medicine.

Dr. Yinghua (Jennie) Yu, a cultural expert and lecturer at the University of Sydney, is also a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Institute for Culture and Society (ICS), Western Sydney University. Her research broadly engages with social theories, work and organisational studies, migration, gender and diversity, and work and family dynamics.
Before pursuing an academic career, Yinghua worked as a Human Resources Management consultant, specializing in expatriate management and immigration policies. With a background in business and management, Yinghua has endeavoured to bring industry knowledge to her research and to develop evidence-based policy recommendations.
In 2023, Yinghua was awarded her PhD from the Institute for Culture and Society (ICS), Western Sydney University. Her doctoral studies focused on exploring the experiences of new Chinese professional women in Australia, specifically in relation to their careers, workplace experiences, and work-life balance.
Yinghua has actively contributed to several ARC Discovery and Linkage projects at ICS and has published papers in reputable journals such as Culture Unbound and the Journal of Intercultural Studies.

Dr. Ruiyuan (Ada) Wang, an accomplished interpreter and translator, holds a unique educational background with dual master's degrees from Xi'an Jiaotong University and Western Sydney University, alongside a PhD from Western Sydney University. In her role as Associate Director of the Translation Department at Shaanxi Normal University's School of International Studies, she specialises in cross-cultural studies and interpreter training. Dr. Wang's substantial research contributions are marked by numerous publications in esteemed domestic and international journals, underscoring her profound grasp of cultural nuances in communication.
In practice, Dr. Wang's professional certifications from both the NAATI in Australia and the China Accreditation Test for Translators and Interpreters (CATTI) attest to her excellence. She has extensive experience as an interpreter in high-level seminars involving the Ministry of Commerce of China and the Australian Trade Commission (Austrade). Her expertise in medical interpreting is showcased through freelance work with Legal Aid Sydney, Sydney Local Health District (SLHD) Interpreters, and Ethnic Interpreters. Besides her on-field work, Dr. Wang imparts her knowledge as an interpreting instructor at Australian Ideal College and Feifan English Training School. Her pedagogical approach, which prioritises cultural competence and advanced medical interpreting skills, equips new interpreters to successfully navigate the challenges of a globalised professional landscape.
