Thesis Title

The Neural Basis of Object Categorization in the Infant Brain

Research Project

Humans have a remarkable ability to recognize objects quickly and accurately, even in the face of enormous visual variability. Nevertheless, the ability to recognize the same object under a variety of different visual conditions is something that must be acquired throughout the course of development. When does an infant understand that the red cup left on the kitchen counter in the morning is the same object her mother is raising to drink tea from in the afternoon? Or how do infants come to recognize objects when they are only partly visible, such as when a cup is partially obscured by a flowerpot? My research aims to answer these questions. During my PhD projects, I will take advantage of neuroimaging techniques such as electroencephalography (EEG) and machine learning algorithms to study the development of invariance in object recognition during the first year of life.
