What is AT?

Assistive Technology (AT) is a term used to describe tools and devices used to make a task easier to accomplish. It may be utilising certain functionality on your phone, like predictive text and dictation, or using a tool on a computer or tablet to assist with using the device, notetaking, research, reading and writing.

Who can use AT?

Everyone at Western. All students and staff.

Why use AT?

At university, AT can:

Enhance your ability to study or work effectively and independently.
Prevent injury and impairment, supporting a person's well-being.
Lessen or remove barriers experienced by staff and students in or out of the classroom, office, laboratories, or during exams.

This may look like:

Alternative ways of accessing materials based on your preference and need.
Tools to help capture, organise and make use of your research.
Tools to support your notetaking and study habits.
Tools to help capture, prioritise and manage upcoming tasks.
Tools to lessen the impact of computer use on your body.

Where can I get AT at Western?

Students and staff can install a range of AT on your personal devices, giving you off-campus access.
Various study tools are also widely available across all our campus computers - Computer Labs, Libraries and Access Rooms and staff devices.
Students can access additional, specialised AT like magnification devices with a referral from the Disability Service.
Staff can access additional, specialised AT with a Reasonable Adjustment Plan (RAP) through Equity, Diversity, Safety and Wellbeing Services.

How we support you.

The Assistive Technology Service Charter outlines the role of Assistive Technology support staff within ITDS and the way we will best serve our clients. We use this Charter to set standards, measure performance in delivering support services, and maintain focus on client needs.
