Lang Walker AO Medical Research Building

Welcome to a New Era in Collaborative Research in South Western Sydney

World-class research and patient care

The Lang Walker AO Medical Research Building will form part of a new research and medical precinct in the Campbelltown Hospital redevelopment, delivering world-class research and healthcare for the Macarthur region and wider Western Sydney community. Opened in November 2025, the three-storey facility will provide the infrastructure needed for greater scientific, clinical and industry collaboration, positioning the region as a leading healthcare destination in NSW.

A visionary partnership driving better health outcomes

The project was delivered through a partnership between Western Sydney University, Walker, South Western Sydney Local Health District, Ingham Institute for Applied Medical Research and the University of New South Wales Sydney. Bringing together world-leading researchers and clinicians across many disciplines, the facility will focus on a range of complex health challenges including mental illness, diabetes, healthcare of Indigenous, culturally and linguistically diverse communities, paediatrics, and addiction medicine.

Activating Research and Innovation

Home to the Ingham Institute for Applied Medical Research in Macarthur, it will be a hub for medical and scientific innovation - bringing research, education, and clinical practice together under one roof.

Western Sydney University will activate this state-of-the-art facility through six clinical research projects funded by the School of Health Sciences Clinical Research Seed Funding Scheme. Each project is co-led by a Western academic and an allied health clinician from South Western Sydney Local Health District, addressing real community needs—from supporting caregivers of newborns discharged with nasogastric tubes to improving musculoskeletal health in culturally and linguistically diverse populations.

These initiatives will also create unique opportunities for students to collaborate with clinicians and researchers, gaining hands-on experience in multidisciplinary research that delivers real-world impact.

“The Lang Walker AO Medical Research Building – Macarthur stands as a powerful example of what can be achieved when community, research, and innovation come together. Grounded in the needs of our region, this world-class facility is a home for research that will transform health outcomes locally and beyond.’’“By listening to our community and turning research into action, we have created a place where innovative solutions will improve lives and shape the future of south western Sydney.” - Vice-Chancellor and President, Distinguished Professor George Williams AO.

“Located next to the University’s Macarthur Clinical School, the Lang Walker AO Medical Research Building will provide an opportunity for researchers and clinicians to work more closely together, strengthening connections between research, education, and clinical practice. Western continues its commitment to supporting the health needs of a growing population in south-western Sydney.” - Executive Dean, Faculty of Health, Professor Sarah Lewis.
