The Internship Experience

With the support and encouragement of Professor Alex Ling, Dr Rowena Butland, Professor Tanya Notley, Professor Loshini Naidoo and Dr Jenna Condie, Dr Thilakshi undertook an internship that directly complemented her doctoral research. Their leadership and commitment to championing research-aligned industry experiences enable HDR candidates to apply their expertise in real-world settings, build valuable professional networks, and enhance their career opportunities both within and beyond academia.

Working within the Sydney Opera House's Community Engagement team, Dr Thilakshi contributed to initiatives that promote greater participation in arts and culture among Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) communities and several other community organisations. She supported community programs and events, engaged with community partners, and applied mixed-method research and evaluation approaches to capture community experiences and inform future program developments, demonstrating the practical value of doctoral research in a leading cultural institution.

Impact

The internship enhanced Dr Thilakshi’s ability to translate research into practice while gaining firsthand experience in stakeholder engagement, program delivery and community partnership development. It highlights how SABEL's Doctoral internship initiatives connect research with industry, creating opportunities for candidates to develop career-ready skills while delivering tangible benefits to the communities they serve.

Key outcomes

• Strengthening evaluation and evidence-based practice across Community Engagement programs.
