The Internship Experience
Facilitated by Professor Olivia Mirza (Faculty of Engineering), the placement drew on an established eight-year industry relationship to create a high-impact internship aligned to both student development and industry needs
During the 12-week internship placement in Sydney, Tharika contributed to multiple concurrent engineering projects, accelerating her exposure to industry practice within a leading consultancy environment. She delivered structural designs and verified calculations for bridges, warehouses, portal frames, and architectural elements. She also produced engineering reports, technical documentation, and drafted mark-ups aligned with ACOR’s multidisciplinary project delivery standards.
Tharika applied industry-standard tools such as SpaceGass, SLB, and Hilti, and participated in site inspections, audits, and feasibility studies alongside experienced engineering teams, gaining insight into how ACOR translates technical expertise into real-world infrastructure outcomes.
This immersive experience enabled Tharika to translate doctoral-level research into commercial impact, enhancing her employability, confidence, and readiness for the Australian engineering sector. While remaining committed to pursuing a career in academia, Tharika’s experience at ACOR highlighted the importance of bridging teaching and research with industry to create meaningful engineering impact.
