Mass Spectrometry Facility

Western Sydney University’s Mass Spectrometry Facility (MSF) provides state-of-the-art mass spectrometry and expertise to assist in all stages of research from initial concept to publication. The MSF supports Western graduate and post-graduate research in medical, biological, molecular, and macromolecular fields. Additionally, we provide external sample analysis services on a fee-for-service or collaborative basis.

The facility houses cutting-edge mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography instrumentation and services. This allows the facility to offer a range of analytical techniques including targeted and untargeted detection of metabolites, proteins, and lipids (metabolomics, proteomics, and lipidomics); elucidation of the structure and properties of molecules; quantification of chemicals and biochemicals; simultaneous collection of UV/Vis and MS data; and access to extensive data processing and analysis software.

Our staff provide expert technical skills and services including:

  • student training and education
  • development, optimisation and validation of LC/MS/MS methods
  • collaboration and consultation on experimental approach, design, methodologies, sample preparation
  • data acquisition, processing and interpretation
  • publication assistance.

The Mass Spectrometry Facility can conduct High Sensitivity Targeted Chemical and Biochemical analysis and High Resolution Untargeted analysis. The Facility currently offers the following equipment for research:

  • SCIEX 7500 QTrap
  • Waters Xevo TQMS; and
  • Waters SYNAPT G2-Si.
