EV Charger Upgrades
A better EV charging experience is on the way
We’re upgrades EV charging infrastructure at Hawkesbury, Kingswood, Parramatta South and Campbelltown campuses to deliver a more reliable, easier to use charging network.
Why this upgrade is important
This upgrade improves charging reliability, performance and capacity across campus, supporting the University’s Electrification Roadmap and sustainability objectives.
What is happening
EV charging infrastructure across Western’s traditional campuses is being upgraded, with existing chargers replaced with modern, higher-performance units designed to meet current and future demand.
The University is also transitioning to a new charging platform Exploren, to improve system reliability, monitoring and future capacity.
EV charger upgrades will be delivered in stages across campuses. During this period, some chargers may be temporarily unavailable, and minor traffic or access changes may occur near charging locations.
Please allow extra time and plan ahead.
What this means for you
- We’re switching from Chargefox to Exploren, Australia’s most trusted EV charging network
- Access to complimentary charging, you will need to create a new Exploren account using your Western Sydney University email address
- During the staged installation of new chargers, you may experience temporary access restrictions , minor traffic changes, increased contractor activity near charging areas, and occasional outages. We will communicate the staged disruptions with dates once the program is complete, so you can plan ahead. Please allow extra time and plan your activities accordingly.
- EV chargers are being standardised to CCS2 connectors, which is now the most widely adopted charging standard for new electric vehicles in Australia.
- CHAdeMO connectors will be phased out as part of the EV charger upgrade. Some vehicles may require a CCS2 adaptor to continue charging on campus.
Before you arrive
To avoid disruption:
- Download the Exploren app before arriving on campus (available on the App Store or Google Play)
- Create a new account using your Western Sydney University email address*. (Private email accounts are not supported for complimentary charging access)
- Check this page regularly for updates during the work period. Allow extra time in case a charger is temporarily unavailable
Easy charging options
Chargers can be accessed in two ways:
- Using the Exploren app, registered with your Western Sydney University email address
- By registering your details to your staff or student card for tap‑and‑charge access at enabled locations
Note: Complimentary charging access is only available to users registered with a Western Sydney University email address.
