Internships with the School of Business

About Internships

Our Business School offers a range of real-world business experiences including internships and business consulting projects across a range of disciplines including accounting, economics, finance, hospitality management, human resource management, international business, management, marketing, property and sports management. Students have the opportunity to develop career skills and build professional network while gaining real industry experience. This may be conducted face-to-face, in an online environment or as a hybrid of both face-to-face and online real-world work experiences.

In this fast pace and ever-changing environment, it is now more important than ever for graduates to be able to provide evidence to future employers of their skills and abilities. While an academic transcript can provide employers with useful information about a student’s performance, an internship can demonstrate how a graduate transfers these learned skills into the workplace and applies the important skills of communication, teamwork and problem-solving.

An internship is a win-win opportunity for both employers and students. While employers are able to secure innovative, skilled students to assist with projects, students are able to gain a taste of their chosen career and build their portfolio to assist with future career opportunities. In some cases, internships can lead to future successful recruitment activities between the employer and the student.

Our School offers both paid internships and unpaid internships for students across a range of organisations including small to medium sized businesses (SMEs), large corporations, the government sector (local, state, federal) and the not-for-profit sector. A range of organisations that the School of Business has partnered with are showcased on this page.

Paid internships are advertised to students via the Western Sydney University Careers Hub. Please email careers@westernsydney.edu.au to advertise your paid internships or alternatively contact business.engagements@westernsydney.edu.au if you would like more information or to speak with someone from the School about offering a paid internship.

Unpaid internships are offered to students for academic credit and are linked to the learning outcomes of a specific course or unit (subject). Such internships involve a placement agreement with the employer. Students are allocated an academic supervisor and are covered for insurance purposes by the University while they are on placement. Further information about Western Sydney’s unpaid internships is contained below.

Undergraduate Internships

Our Business School provides students with the opportunity to apply the skills and knowledge they are developing during their studies to tasks within a workplace. These internships build on the comprehensive, coherent and connected knowledge gained in business specialisations to allow the students to explore and develop attributes required to be successful in contributing to outcomes in a business environment. Undergraduate Internships are usually offered to students in their final year of a Bachelor of Business degree.

The School has partnered successfully with a range of enterprises to offer valuable internship opportunities to students and while continuing these partnerships is eager to develop new partnerships to ensure that as many students as possible are able to gain real world industry experience to complement their academic study.

For more information, contact business.internships@westernsydney.edu.au or if you are looking to offer an undergraduate internship and wish to discuss further, please contact business.engagements@westernsydney.edu.au.

The Sydney Graduate School of Management (SGSM) at Western Sydney University (WSU) runs a well-established, successful and very attractive Business Internship Program for enterprises, organisations – and students. Postgraduate Internships are usually offered to SGSM students in their final year of a Masters degree program.

Our partner enterprises and organisations gain access to our best, experienced, skilled and innovative students to work on key projects. Internships are eagerly sought by students to gain experience in an industry or sector specific environment (or workspace) and offer key insights and knowledge on specific projects within an enterprise or organisation.

SGSM Business Internships are unpaid, and project-based to be aligned with specific units (subjects) with their academic courses. SGSM runs an Internship Round every Quarter, placing students in Internships four times per year within a few weeks of the commencement of each quarter. Students can undertake a Business Internship over 1-Quarter (up to 3 months) that is credited to one unit (subject), or over 2-Quarters.

We are always seeking new partnerships with enterprises and organisations who are keen to offer online internships where the students can work on projects that help them to gain insights into working in a specific vocation/professional work environment. These Internships should enable students to contribute knowledge gained from their Business courses at SGSM through a project and they should always add value to the organisations that they work for.

Feedback

“My time at WSU was some of the most rewarding of my life! Over the course of my Sports Management Degree, I learnt a wide variety of topics which are relevant to my current position at the GIANTS. The staff at WSU genuinely care for their students and do everything in their power to see them succeeded. The complementary balance of learning the theories behind sports management and a mix of practical real world experience has attributed to my current success.”

“Not only did my degree from Western Sydney University set me up for my dream career, the Sport faculty ensured I went for it when it was presented. While in my final semester at WSU, I was offered the position of Sport Operations Manager at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games but was considering turning it down as it meant that I potentially had to pause my studies to take it- which is something I really didn’t want to do. When I had mentioned this to some of my lecturers at the time about this predicament, it became clear that there was no way they were going to let turn me down the job. The sport team helped me finish my final semester from the Gold Coast so I could graduate on time. By no means was it easy, but I knew I had their support and couldn’t have done it without them. I am forever grateful to those who pushed me to go for it, as it was the best experience of my life.”

National Coaching and Development Manager : Sporting Shooters Association of Australia.

“In 2018, I graduated from University of Western Sydney with a Bachelor of Business and Commence (Sports Management).Through studying at WSU, I was able to gain valued industry experience enabling me to be in the position I am today. As part of the internship unit, I was lucky enough to complete my internship hours at the Parramatta Eels which lead in to casual employment. I was then fortunate enough to be offered a full time position at the Parramatta Eels where I am currently the Community Executive. I don’t believe that I would be where I am today, gained the industry experience with sporting professionals or made key contacts within the sporting industry without WSU".
