The High Achieving Teachers Western Sydney University are led by:

Deputy Dean of Education, Western Sydney University. Current research and teaching interests are Curriculum and Pedagogy. Dr Carroll has contributed to external accreditation for Australian Institute for Teaching & School Leadership (AITSL), has taught across primary and secondary programs.

Dean and Professor in Education at Western Sydney University. Professor Simons has more than three decades of experience undertaking research and evaluation studies to inform theory and practice in workforce development and work integrated and professional learning.
 

Director of Academic program Secondary, Dr Berger research focusses on improving equitable outcomes for students regardless of their gender or socioeconomic background, through academic research, teacher professional development, and engagement with schools and school systems.

Academic Program Advisor Secondary Dr Nketsia is a Senior Lecturer of inclusive education and researcher at the Centre of Educational Research. Dr Nketsia has developed and led research projects in the fields of inclusiveness and sustainability through international collaboration yielding over 50 high-ranking peer-reviewed publications.

Dr Maree Skillen has a broad background in K-12 education, with expertise in the curriculum and pedagogical areas of science, mathematics and computing. She has held senior management and executive roles in tertiary institutions and secondary schools across NSW and is the former Director of Academic Program (Primary) for the WSU School of Education.She serves as an Executive Board Member and Treasurer for the Mathematical Association of New South Wales (MANSW), as well as Chair of the Finance and Risk Management Committee for the Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers (AAMT). Dr Skillen has a research interest focused on the involvement of second-language parents’ in supporting their children’s learning and has supervised several doctoral students whose study has focused on English as a Foreign Language (EFL).

Dr. Pegah Marandi is an Associate Lecturer in the School of Education at Western Sydney University and a Researcher in the Centre for Educational Research (CER). With an interest in Higher Education, EAL/D Learners, International Students' Journeys, Initial Teacher Education, and English Literature, she has built an academic and research portfolio in Australia and overseas
 

 Zana Jabir is an Associate Lecturer, Secondary Education in the School of Education at Western Sydney. Her interests are English, English Literature, EAL/D, Indigenous Education, and International Education. Leadership, Imagination, cultural and spiritual pedagogies.

Leader of the ‘Education in the Anthropocene’ research program at WSU, Former Associate Dean, Higher Degree Research and Honours program director. David has published over 18 academic books on education, and 150+ other peer reviewed publications, along with 65 keynote addresses. He is a leader in Interdisciplinary research.

Dr. Hanham, Director of Academic Programs (Postgraduate Studies), specialises in learning and instruction across all levels of formal education—primary, secondary, and tertiary. His research employs diverse methodologies, including randomized controlled trials and longitudinal studies, to examine the impact of instructional strategies such as testing and project-based learning on student performance and motivation. He also engages in international collaborative research based in Indonesia and the UK, further broadening the scope and impact of his work.

About High Achieving Teachers

Applications from potential candidates who currently have an undergraduate degree and who may teach in a community languages school, or who are multilingual are invited to apply. Cohort 1 or Cohort 2 to become a HAT (High Achieving Teacher).

• Cohort 1: 50 participants in 2025-2026.
• Cohort 2: 50 participants in 2026-2027.

Support for HAT Participants

A bursary of $10 000 per year of study will be provided to each HAT participant to be used to support their studies.

The following three currently nationally accredited courses will be used as a basis for the HAT pilot: 

  • Master of Teaching Secondary (1714)
  • Master of Teaching Secondary STEM (1848)
  • Master of Teaching Primary (1781)
