Student Self-Help Guide: Using Blackboard Ultra

A step-by-step guide to the things students get stuck on most often — work through the steps yourself, or use this page to jump straight to what you need.

Still stuck after trying these steps? Each topic below ends with guidance on who to contact next — usually your Subject Coordinator for anything about content, marks or deadlines, or the IT Service Desk for a technical fault that doesn't go away.

Finding your way around Ultra

Can't find your subject?

  1. Go to ‘Subject Sites’ in the menu on the left-hand side of the screen.
  2. Look for your subject in the list shown.

If it's not there: subjects only appear once your Subject Coordinator has published the site, and once the teaching period has officially started.

A dark navigation menu on the left highlights Subject Sites and includes links such as Home Page, Activity, Companion Sites, Calendar, Messages, Grades and Tools. The main area displays search and filter options and lists two subject sites for 2026: Ultra Example (2026) and Ultra Example V3. Each subject site entry includes options to open the site, view staff details and access more information.

Subject looks different to last semester?

WSU is running a mixed environment while subjects move across to Ultra, so you may have some subjects in the new Ultra Course View and others still in the older Original Course View — both are normal right now.

  • Ultra Course View: a single content stream down the centre of the page, with simplified icons at the top.
  • Original Course View: the older layout, with a more traditional menu structure.

The page displays a course content area with a banner showing the university shield logo and a placeholder title, “Your subject name”. Below, content modules include Subject Information, with a welcome message about the subject, and an Assessment Hub, containing assessment information, resources and submission points. A third item, Module 2: Going Organic, is marked as completed. A sidebar on the right shows Companion Site Contacts with teaching staff contact icons, and a Details & Actions section with links for collaboration and institutional tools. Navigation tabs across the top include Content, Calendar, Announcements, Discussions, Grade Centre, Messages, Analytics, Groups and Achievements.
Submitting an assignment

This is the highest-stakes part of using Ultra, so it pays to know exactly what to check before you panic.

Can't find where to submit?

  1. Open Course Content and check the Assessment Hub module
  2. Check inside any folders or learning modules related to the assessment task submission points are sometimes embedded inside these rather than sitting on their own.

If you genuinely can't find it, it may not be released yet — check with your Subject Coordinator rather than assuming something is broken.

The main content area contains sections titled Subject Information and Assessment Hub, each with an illustrated icon and explanatory text. A large blue arrow has been added to the screenshot, pointing towards the Assessment Hub section to draw attention to it. On the right, a sidebar displays Companion Site Contacts with teaching staff contact options and a Details & Actions panel containing links for collaboration sessions and institutional tools. Navigation tabs across the top include Content, Calendar, Announcements, Discussions, Grade Centre, Messages, Analytics, Groups and Achievements.

A Grades/Attempts panel on the right shows a maximum of 20 points and one attempt remaining. A large blue arrow points to the Start attempt button, highlighting where students begin the quiz. The navigation panel on the left lists assessment-related items, including Assessments Overview, Assessment 1 (20%), Assessment 1 Instructions, Assessment 1: Quiz (20%), and Assessment 3 (25%). Navigation controls for moving between activities appear at the top right of the page.

Not sure your submission went through?

After a successful submission, Ultra shows a confirmation message, and the attempt becomes visible with a timestamp.

  1. Reopen the assignment - it should show a "Submitted" status along with the file or text you sent.
  2. A green arrow will show against assessments that have been submitted

A green checkmark appears beside Assessment 1: Quiz (20%), indicating it has been completed. A large blue arrow points directly to the completed quiz item to highlight its location within the assessment list. At the top of the section, an assessment hub icon and explanatory text note that key assessment information, resources and submission points are available in this area.

Want to resubmit or fix a mistake?

This depends entirely on how your Subject Coordinator has set up the assignment.

  • If multiple attempts are allowed, you'll see a "Start New Attempt" option on the assignment page.
  • If not, and the deadline hasn't passed, contact your Subject Coordinator directly.

The panel shows one previous submission, one attempt remaining, and a Start attempt 2 button. A large blue arrow points directly to the Start attempt 2 button, highlighting how students can begin a second attempt at the quiz.

Assignment says overdue but still lets you submit?

This is expected Ultra behaviour, not a glitch. A submission point can stay open after the due date if your Subject Coordinator hasn't closed it -but any late penalty or whether it's accepted at all is determined by your subject's own policy. Check your Subject Outline or ask your Subject Coordinator.

Still stuck? For anything about deadlines, extensions, resubmission, or marks, your Subject Coordinator makes that call. For a technical fault during submission that won't go away, contact the IT Service Desk.

Checking your grades and feedback

Can't see your grade?

  1. Check the Grades icon in your subject's left-hand menu.

If an assessment shows no grade, it's most likely still being marked — there's no way to speed this up, and it doesn't mean anything has gone wrong.

The top navigation menu highlights Grade Centre, and a blue arrow points towards this tab. In the grades table below, a second blue arrow points to the grade 57/100 for Assessment 1 (20%). Other listed items include Assessment 1: Quiz (20%), marked as submitted and not yet graded, and a knowledge check activity marked as unopened. The page also shows due dates, assessment status, grades, and View buttons for accessing results.

Finding feedback

  1. Click into the specific grade entry — feedback (including any rubric, if one was used) appears on that detail view rather than the summary list.

The grades table is visible in the background, showing Assessment 1 (20%) with a mark of 57/100. On the right, a side panel titled Assessment 1 (20%) displays the student’s grade and instructor feedback. A large blue arrow points to the feedback section, which contains the comment “Great work!”. The panel also shows the assessor’s profile icon and an instructor label.
Notifications and staying in the loop

Choose the notifications best for you

  1. Open your account's information and settings via your profile icon, top left

  2. Check which events are set to send an email, Activity Stream, or in-app alerts, and adjust as needed.

A large blue arrow points to the user profile area at the top of the menu, while another blue arrow highlights the Email notifications option under Global Notification Settings on the right-hand side of the page. The main profile area displays user information, including a profile image placeholder, full name and email address, along with settings for language, privacy and notification preferences.

The Email Notifications tab is selected, displaying options for how often email notifications are received. The setting “Email me once a day” is selected, while “Email me straight away” is not selected. Below, a list of notification categories is shown with checkboxes, including New items to be graded, New grades and feedback, New messages, New discussion messages, New content added, New and upcoming due dates, Overdue items, and New subjects available. At the bottom of the panel are Cancel and Save buttons. A close button appears in the top-left corner of the settings panel.

Can't find announcements?

There's no separate "inbox" for these. Announcements appear in your Activity Stream, and may also have their own Announcements icon if your Subject Coordinator has turned it on.

columns

The top navigation menu shows several sections, including Content, Calendar, Announcements, Discussions, Grade Centre, Messages, Analytics, Groups and Achievements. A large blue arrow points to the Announcements tab, which is selected and displays a notification badge showing six unread announcements. The main content area lists announcements in a table with titles, preview text and posting dates. Examples include Welcome to Nutrition 101 Spring 2026, Assessment 3: Checkpoint 1 Details, Welcome to week 4, and How to submit your assignment in Ultra. A search icon appears in the top-right corner of the announcements list.

Still stuck? If notifications still aren't arriving after checking your settings, that's worth a check with the IT Service Desk — it may be an account-level issue.

Troubleshooting technical isssues

Page looks broken or won't load?

This is often an outdated browser or a cached page rather than a fault with Ultra itself.

  1. Try a hard refresh of the page.
  2. Clear your browser cache.
  3. Try a different supported browser — Chrome or Edge are the most reliable.

If the problem follows you across browsers, it's time to contact the IT Service Desk.

Can't see content you expect to be there?

Three different situations all look exactly the same from where you're sitting:

  • The content is deliberately hidden.
  • The content is release-conditioned — set to appear on a certain date or once another task is done.
  • The content is genuinely missing or misconfigured.

There's no way to tell these apart just by looking, so if you believe something should be visible, the right move is to check with your Subject Coordinator rather than assume it's broken.

Works on your laptop but not the app?

The Blackboard mobile app has reduced functionality compared to using a full browser — some content types and interactive tools don't render properly on it.

  1. Before treating it as a fault, try the same task in a browser first.

Still stuck? A technical fault that survives a browser change and a fresh device is the one to take to the IT Service Desk. Anything about why content is or isn't visible goes to your Subject Coordinator.

Groups and online classes

Don't know what group you're in?

Group allocation is set up differently in every subject, so it isn't always obvious from the main navigation.

  1. Check the Groups icon in the subject's left-hand menu, if the subject uses one.
  2. Otherwise, check the instructions for the relevant group assignment — your group is often referenced there directly.

Can't join the online class?

This is most commonly a browser permissions issue, or trying to join before the session has opened.

  1. Check your browser has allowed microphone and camera access.
  2. Confirm the session's scheduled start time.
  3. If the subject uses Collaborate, run the connection and audio check tool that's usually available before joining.

Still stuck? Questions about which group you've been allocated to go to your Subject Coordinator. Ongoing audio or video problems that survive a permissions and browser check go to the IT Service Desk.
