Biography

Carolyn Sappideen joined Western Sydney School of Law in 1996.  She was Chair of the School of Law, for the period 1998 to 2006. In 2007 she resumed the position as Professor of Law.  Her main area of expertise is Torts Law but has research interests and expertise also in Property Law, Electricity, Law and Medicine and Employment Law. She has a special interest in Elder Law. The School introduced the first elective in Elder Law in Australia in 1999. This has formed the basis of a growing expertise in Elder Law and the publication of  Elder Law Review.    She is the co-editor with Prof Prue Vines of the 10th edition of Fleming The Law of Torts and co-author of Torts Commentary and Materials which is now in its 12th edition. She is also a consultant editor for the Lexis Nexis Australian Civil Liability.   She is the remaining contributing foundation author of Mackens Law of Employment from the 1st edition in 1978 to the current 8th edition in 2016.  She is also actively involved in a number of projects on how property rights and legal frameworks can be utilised for affordable home ownership in particular, community land trusts.

Carolyn Sappideen's research focus is the Law of Torts.   She has been co-author of a leading Australian textbook on Torts Law,Torts, Commentary and Materials  from the 5th edition (1981) to the current 12th edition.  She is the co-editor and chapter author of the leading international Torts reference work,  Fleming The Law of Torts now in its 12th edition.     Torts law is the foundation for her work on medical negligence, with emphasis on medical negligence and standard of care issues.  She was a foundation co-author of the leading Australian Employment Law reference work,  Mackens  Law of Employment from the 1st edition in  1978 to the current 8th edition in 2016.  She has a continuing interest in Elder Law as co-editor of the Elder Law Review and is co-editor and chapter author of a forthcoming book on Elder Law.  Her research interests also extend to legal aspects of community land trusts and how existing legal frameworks can be adapted in order to promote affordable home ownership.   She has been a participant in funded projects on community land trusts and is co-author and chapter author of the manual on Community Land Trusts and co-author and chapter author for a  forthcoming book on Community Land Trusts.
