Biography

Professor Sarah Lewis is the Dean of the School of Health Sciences at Western Sydney University. She is a leading medical imaging academic, senior researcher, registered diagnostic radiographer and breast cancer survivor. Previously she was the Associate Dean of Research at the University of Sydney, Faculty of Medicine and Health, and she completed her PhD in 2004 and a Master of Education in 2011. Educationally, she has been the Course Director for both the University of Sydney’s Master of Diagnostic Radiography (2005-07) and Bachelor (2014-18) programs and the Faculty of Health's Sub-Dean of Students (2012-15). In 2018-2020 Prof Lewis was Head of Discipline for Medical Imaging Science, the first female radiographer to be appointed to this position where she led +35 academic staff, +800 coursework and +35 HDR students training as radiographers or in medical imaging research. She is an Advanced Higher Education mentor, an Australian "Franklin Women" mentor and the past Deputy Editor and Associate Editor (Education) of Australia’s only medical radiation practice journal, the Journal of Medical Radiation Sciences.

For the last decade, Prof Lewis has been a highly influencial international medical imaging educator and accreditation assessor, as Deputy Chair of the Medical Radiation Practice Board of Australia (MRPBA) Accreditation Committee (2015-present), MRPBA Examiner-in-Chief for Australia (2015-2019), and Chair of the Australian Council of Deans of Medical Radiation Science (2016-2017). Prof Lewis has represented the MRPBA at the Independent Review of Accreditation Systems within the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme (The Woods Review) and Health Professions Accreditation Council’s Forum (HPACF).  She has lead accreditation assessments in New Zealand, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and the United Kingdom, and is the external examiner for medical imaging at City, University of London.

Prof Lewis has been awarded prizes for excellence in teaching, mentoring and research, winning the University of Sydney’s Vice Chancellor’s Award for Outstanding Teaching and Research (2018) and Vice Chancellor's Award for Support of the Student Experience (2015).  Having been diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012, Prof Lewis has acted as an ambassador to improve the survivorship with keynote speeches and written pieces for Targeting Cancer (2015-17), NSW Cancer Council (2015-present), parents living with cancer (Huffington Post, 2015) and National Breast Cancer Foundation (2016-current). Prof Lewis combines her personal experiences with research expertise to advocate on behalf of cancer consumers nationally. As Associate Dean she led the University of Sydney’s Faculty of Medicine and Health’s strategy in consumer co-design in research and she is a regular media expert for breast screening.

Prof Lewis has led and supervised large teams of medical imaging researchers (higher degree by research students (HDRs), Post-Docs, Early-mid Career Researchers) with Q1 medical imaging/oncology publications (150 peer-reviewed publications, +1366 citations, i10 index of 36 since 2017). She has been awarded $12M in funding since 2014, including $4.7 as CIA in funding from the Australian Government and the National Breast Cancer Foundation with additional industry funding with Bayer for projects in breast imaging and education. She has supervised 17 PhD students (8 of those clinical radiographers, 12 as primary supervisor) and 24 first class Honors (Radiography) students. As Director of the government funded Breast Screen Reader Assessment Strategy (BREAST), she has continued to evolve this international best-practice research/education program, growing BREAST to engage 85% of breast-reading clinicians across BreastScreen centers in Australia which make up Australia’s national screening program. BREAST has increased diagnostic efficacy of readers by 34% and the program has been expanded to include radiology registrars, surgeons and radiographers.

Prof Lewis leads in the classification of mammograms has led to an expanded memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Harvard University, and trials of education strategies to improve radiologist performance in Hong Kong/China - this work was awarded best research project of the International Workshop of Breast Imaging (IWBI 2016) and is the foundation of her NBCF Investigator Grant (2022-6), one of three Mother’s Day Classic featured supported projects from 2022.

Since 2016, Prof Lewis has worked on optimization, clinical evaluation, and clinical translation of phase-contrast imaging at Imaging and Medical Beamline (IMBL) of Australian Synchrotron. This is part of the IMPACT project which is the IMplementation of x-ray PhAse-Contrast Tomography to transform cancer diagnosis. It focuses on the detection of breast cancer and has been expanded to include lung cancer detection as well. She is leading the team in preparation of running a clinical trial to use phase-contrast tomography for breast imaging.  Prof Lewis is also leading artificial intelligence studies in breast radiology supported by grants from the National Breast Cancer Foundation and the Sydney Cancer Institute to enhance diagnostic efficacy in breast radiology via artificial intelligence education.
