Biography

Dr Penny Abbott (MBBS Hons, PhD, MPH, FRACGP, GAICD) is an academic general practitioner. Her research and community interests are broad, and include a focus on collaboration, social justice, equitable health care access and primary care.

She is a clinician within the women’s health stream of Justice Health & Forensic Mental Health Network (JH&FMHN) and previously worked as a GP in the Aboriginal community controlled health sector for over 20 years. She has many community-based and professional roles including as a director on the JH&FMHN Board, membership of the Western Sydney Primary Health Network Clinical Council and  contributions to the RACGP, including through the Faculty of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health and custodial health and addiction medicine special interest groups. 

In her PhD she used multiple methods to examine health care access for women involved with the criminal justice system. She is experienced in qualitative research and clinical trials, and has undertaken research in diverse areas such as the health and wellbeing of people in prison, Aboriginal health, health services research, substance misuse,  and cultural competence. She currently leads and co-leads two large NHMRC multicentred clinical trials researching the management of childhood ear disease in Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander children. In 2018 she was awarded a Churchill travelling fellowship to examine primary health care access for people leaving prison and people with addictions.
