Biography

Dr Kate Huppatz is an Associate Professor in Sociology at Western Sydney University. Prior to joining WSU Kate completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Sydney (2007-2010) where she also studied for her honours degree and PhD in Sociology (2003-2007). Kate’s research explores the role of labour and culture in the production and reproduction of gender inequality, with a focus on workplaces and families. Her workplace scholarship interrogates feminised jobs, trajectories, and occupations, and experiences of gendered workplace violence. Kate’s family research examines unpaid care labour in the home, with an emphasis on the work-family nexus, and mothering identities and practices. She also explores gender violence in families and households. In both areas of research Kate takes up an intersectional perspective and theorises the relationship between gender and social class. Her research has informed university workplace policy and has made recommendations for work and family policy reform, making impact in relation to organisational approaches to career interruption and care. She has produced two edited books (with co-authors) and two sole authored monographs titled Gender Capital at Work: intersections of femininity, masculinity, class and occupation (Palgrave Macmillan UK, 2012) and Gender, Work and Social Theory (Bloomsbury, UK, 2022).  Kate was joint Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Sociology (Sage) from 2017 to 2020, and Deputy Chair of Senate from 2020 to 2021, she is currently Discipline Lead of Sociology and Associate Dean of Research, Social Sciences.
