Biography

Karen Liu is an occupational therapist who has practised in Australia, Hong Kong, and the USA. She received a PhD in 2002 in rehabilitation sciences specialising in neurological rehabilitation. Karen is a Fellow of the Occupational Therapy Australia Research Academy. Her areas of clinical, teaching, and research include physical and neurological rehabilitation, paediatric and geriatric rehabilitation.

Karen's current research focus includes using cognitive strategies such as mental imagery and self-regulation in rehabilitation to enhance functional regain in older adults and different clinical conditions. She also researches using various strategies to improve learning in children with developmental disabilities. One of her current projects involves educating caregivers using effective strategies in assisting people with dementia. She is also interested in using physical activities to enhance people’s cognitive and physical functioning. For the above areas of studies, besides investigating the clinical efficacy of interventions, Karen is also interested in studying individuals' behaviour and neural mechanism to understand how and why the intervention works.

Karen is actively seeking research collaboration with clinicians and industry partners to translate research findings into practice.
