Biography

Gu Fang received his Bachelor of Engineering degree in Mechanical Automation from Shanghai University of Technology in China, and his PhD from the University of Sydney in Australia. He is a Professor in Mechatronics Engineering at WSU. He is the Associate Dean (International) in the School of Engineering. Gu's teaching and research are mainly in the areas of robotics, control systems and artificial intelligence. He won a national teaching award from the Office for Learning and Teaching (OLT),  a Gold Disruptors award from Australian Computer Society, and a teaching award from WSU.  He has worked at universities both in Australia and in China and has published many papers in books, international journals and conferences. He has served as a reviewer for many international journals and conferences and is a member of Engineers Australia and IEEE.

Gu's main research interests include: computer vision in robotic applications; neural network and fuzzy logic control in robotics; robotic welding; and particle swarm optimisation in robotics.

His papers have been nominated for a number of 'best paper' awards and one of his papers was awarded the best paper at an international conference. Gu is a Visiting Researcher in the Intelligent Robotic Welding Technology Laboratory (IRWTL) in Shanghai Jiao-Tong University, Shanghai, China.
