Professor Golo Ahlenstiel

Professor Golo Ahlenstiel

Chair, Medicine, Blacktown,
School of Medicine

Biography

After completing his doctoral degree in immunogenetics at the University of Bonn, Germany, Golo Ahlenstiel received research fellowship awards from the National Institutes of Health (NIH, USA) and from the German Research Foundation (DFG, Germany) to work in the Rehermann laboratory at the NIH on the immunopathogenesis of chronic liver disease, in particular the role of innate immunity in HCV infection. Golo moved to Australia in 2009 to undertake basic physician and advanced training in Gastroenterology and Hepatology, before he became staff Specialist and Conjoint Associate Professor with University of Sydney in 2014. In 2017 Golo Ahlenstiel was appointed Chair of Medicine at Blacktown Mount Druitt Hospitals with Western Sydney of University.

As Professor of Medicine Golo Ahlenstiel now heads the Blacktown Clinical Research Unit (https://www.westernsydney.edu.au/bmdcs_rc), and the Liver research program at Blacktown Hospital & Clinical School. Further, he chairs the newly established bariatric research program that studies all aspects of obesity-related health issues as well as using basic science approaches to understand its pathogenesis. This will allow us to develop new personalized health interventions for our patients.

Golo Ahlenstiel also heads the Immunology Group at Storr Liver Centre at the Westmead Institute for Medical Research (https://www.westmeadinstitute.org.au/research/research-divisions/liver-and-metabolic/liver-immunology-group/overview) with a focus on innate immunity in liver and gut as well as drivers of inflammation in chronic liver and gastrointestinal disease. Golo Ahlenstiel is currently also a Clinical Academic in Gastroenterology & Hepatology at Blacktown Hospital.

This information has been contributed by Professor Ahlenstiel.
