Biography

Geoff is a registered mental nurse having completed his nursing education in the UK in 1993 where he trained at Cambridge. He has 25 years of experience in clinical practice, research, education, and governance related to mental health nursing. He is the author of more than 100 papers. Geoff's clinical experience and programme of research work is focused on mental health nursing in the inpatient environment. For many years he worked in a specialist forensic/ secure care setting in the UK where he amassed a body of peer-reviewed published research which he was later able to use towards his PhD. Geoff is the co-editor of three books related to his time in forensic care: the Handbook of Secure Care (RCPsych Publications), the Psychology of Arson (Routledge), and Firesetting and Mental Health (RCPsych Publications). In addition he his research work on risk assessment for violence and other adverse outcomes in inpatient mental health care has been widely published in international journals. Geoff gained his PhD by means of publication in 2012 at the University of Northampton where he was appointed Professor of Psychiatric Nursing following his graduation. Since then, Geoff has supervised to completion five PhD students (Laura O' Shea: Risk Assessment in Inpatient settings; Nutmeg Hallett: Investigating the violence prevention climate; Rahul Jalil: The role of anger in inpatient violence and its management; Mhairi Thurston:Development of a care model for visual impairment ; James Fraser: Male ex-offenders experiences of healthcare in prison and community settings) and two Masters by Research (Leah Godfrey: Development of the ASc-Me self cutting management scale; Helen Skinner: Mixed methods investigation of individualised music playlists for people with moderate to severe dementia). He was appointed full time professor of mental health nursing at Abertay University in 2014 where he undertook work in mainstream acute mental health services related to nurses and their work with people with borderline personality disorder and has developed an intervention to improve attitudes co-designed with expert-by-experience Jo Mullen (www.JoMullen.com). Geoff made the big move to Western Sydney University in March 2018 seeking fresh challenges. He hopes to continue his program of research related to inpatient mental health care but is also open to other opportunities. In terms of research, Geoff holds expertise related to systematic reviews, tool development, and risk assessment. He is a flexible methodologian who believes in using the best and most appropriate method for the research question at hand.
