Biography

Donna Hartz is a midwife and nurse with over 40 years of experience as a clinician, educator, lecturer, manager, consultant and researcher. She identifies as a descendant of the Kamilaroi (Gomeroi) people. She is a Professor of Midwifery at Western Sydney University and the inaugural Chair of Midwifery for Western Sydney Local Health District, a district she grew up in. 

Donna has extensive experience in maternity care and service redesign, in particular caseload midwifery models of care and maternity service clinical governance. Her current work agenda is informed by previous roles that include: a hospital-accredited independent and homebirth midwife, the first clinical midwife consultant in clinical governance in NSW, the implementation and evaluation of midwifery models of care in particular caseload midwifery at the Ryde free-standing midwifery-led service, and the large caseload midwifery model at the Royal Hospital for Women NSW. She was the project manager for the first three editions of the ACM National Midwifery Guidelines for consultation and referral.

She was the project manager for the first three editions of the ACM National Midwifery Guidelines for consultation and referral. Her current major research projects include Birthing on Country projects, Aboriginal breastfeeding support, child protection education, and smoking cessation in pregnancy.
