Biography

Anand received training in pancreas development, regenerative biology, and (epi)genetics, and is leading research in three distinct areas related to diabetes: i) islet cell biology, ii) cellular physiology and epigenetics, and iii) biomarkers of diabetes and fetal programming.  Anand received Ph.D. for his work in pancreas regenerative biology (with Prof. Ramesh Bhonde) and undernutrition (with Prof. Chittaranjan S. Yajnik) at the National Center for Cell Science (NCCS), Pune, India, and the WHO collaborating center, Catholic University of Louvain (UCL), Belgium (Profs. Joe Hoet & Claude Remacle).  He trained in cellular and molecular biology at the University of Pennsylvania, School of Medicine, Philadelphia (Prof. Doris Stoffers) as well as the NIDDK, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda (Prof. Marvin Gershengorn).  Anand started his group in 2006 at the National Center for Cell Sciences, India, and then migrated to Australia in 2009.  Within Australia, he has worked at the University of New South Wales, the O’Brien Institute, University of Melbourne, the NHMRC Clinical Trials Center, University of Sydney and is now based at the School of Medicine, Western Sydney University. Anand was awarded the Australian Future Fellowship by the Australian Research Council (ARC) in 2012 and currently holds the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) Australia clinical research network (CRN) fellowship (CDA).  With over two decades of research experience, he leads basic and translational research in the islet biology and diabetes group at the Western Sydney University and also as a visiting Professor with the Danish Diabetes Academy, Copenhagen.  Anand is also the vice president of Islet Society, Sweden.

The Hardikar Lab is based in the Ainsworth Building (Building 30) within the School of Medicine, Western Sydney University, Campbelltown, and researches areas in diabetes & islet biology using human cell systems, animal models and clinical research samples. Majority of our research is focused on ncRNA biomarkers of diabetes progression, epigenetic regulation of gene expression and the molecular dis-/similarity amongst naturally occurring insulin-producing cells. One major interest is in the validation of insulin cfDNA and a microRNA signature, identified by our group, in progression to Type 1 diabetes. This involves analysis of around 3000 samples from ethnically diverse individuals without, with or at risk of Type 1 diabetes. We also work with cadaveric human pancreatic islets, biliary duct, gallbladder as well as brain-derived human cells to gather information that would help us understand the regulation of insulin gene expression.
